    a return to the woodshop skills he learned in high school.

    Houston & Fort Worth, Texas | 1978–1980

    Fresh out of college in October 1978, he packed his bags, boarded a Southwest Airlines flight, and became the youngest salesman ever hired in the 30‑year history of Fox & Jacobs — one of Texas’s most iconic homebuilders.


    He didn’t get the job because of experience. He didn’t get the job because of age. 

    He didn’t get the job because of connections.

    He got the job because of HRI — Human Relations Intelligence™ — long before he ever named it.

    The Dale Carnegie Catalyst

    His older brother’s boss was a Dale Carnegie instructor. A fraternity connection led him to a sales class. A spark ignited. A 12‑week transformation began.

    He trained for 21 days across every department — construction, warranty, sales, marketing, design, operations. Everyone knew he was different. 

    Everyone knew he was gifted. Everyone knew he was going to be a star.

    By February — just four months in — he became:

    • Salesman of the Month for Fort Worth

    The Transfer Back to Fort Worth — The Infrastructure Awakening

     After becoming a star in Houston, he transferred to Fort Worth.

     His brother said:

    “Come home. Let’s build something.”

    He left Fox & Jacobs at the top of his game. He co‑founded Lights Unlimited. And within 30 days, he was hired by General Dynamics — because of HRI, not aerospace experience.

    This is where the infrastructure niche was born.

    BBA Marketing | Sports Skellar Leader | Intramural Supervisor Southwest Texas State University

     He didn’t graduate college because he was a great student. 

    He graduated because he showed up — every day, every class, every shift, every game.

    With a 2.26 GPA — one hundredth above the required 2.25 — 

    he earned his BBA in Marketing not through academics, 

    but through HRI, long before he ever named it.

    The Sports Skellar — The First Leadership Platform

    For two years, he was the head employee of the Sports Skellar —

     one of the two major sporting goods stores serving 12,000 students and the entire San Marcos community.

    He did everything:

    • Lettering
    • Silk screening
    • Engraving
    • Stringing rackets
    • Stocking
    • Selling
    • Closing the store
    • Counting the money

    He wasn’t just an employee. He was the face of the store.

    Everyone knew him. Everyone trusted him. Everyone came to him.

    This was the first time he learned the power of:

    • enthusiasm

    • relationship capital

    This was the first time he lived HRI.


    The City League Softball Era — 

    The First Mega‑Event

    For three years, he coached city league softball teams. 

    But in his senior year, he did something no 22‑year‑old had ever attempted:

    He created a two‑division, three‑day, day‑and‑night round‑robin tournament that guaranteed every team four games.

    He secured:

    • 150 trophies
    • major discounts from the Sports Skellar
    • sponsorships for hospitality tents
    • food services
    • out‑of‑town teams from over a dozen Texas cities
    • a live concert
    • and a young opening act named George Strait

    Over 6,000 people attended that Saturday night.

    He slept 5 hours from Friday morning to Monday morning.

    And he learned the lesson that would define his entire life:

    “If you create something big, you must show up big.”

    The Rule That Became HRI

    He made one rule for himself:

    Go to class — no matter what.

    He slept in class. He was exhausted. He was overworked. He was stretched thin.

    • student tournaments

    He umpired every game. He was visible year‑round. He built relationships with thousands of students, faculty, and staff.And here’s the brilliance:

    13 of his final 20 courses were taught by people he met on the fields or in the Sports Skellar.
